Meghalaya is located on the northeastern part of India, with most of its area under the cover of the dense forest. The state is approximately 300 km long and just 100 km wide and shares its borders with the neighbouring state of Assam and the country of Bangladesh. Meghalaya is also popularly called as the ‘abode of clouds’ and ‘Scotland of the East’.
The presence of the forests sometimes acts as a barrier in restricting the smooth flow of transport, but it is indeed the blessing in disguise. Because of the dense lush green cover of forests, it invites the rarely seen species of birds as well as animals in its land. The state harbours two National Parks and three Wildlife Sanctuaries.
There are more than 300 caves located in Meghalaya and are located in the East Khasi Hills, South Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills providing an intriguing element to tourists. The enticing element attached to these caves lies in the manner in which one needs to reach the caves.
The caves are situated in the middle of the murky dark jungles; hence trekking becomes the only medium through which one can take an interesting look at the various caves. Umiam Lake is famous for sightseeing and even adventure water sports can also be performed here.
The various waterfalls such as Elephant Falls, Shadthum Falls, Bishop Falls etc. located in Meghalaya is sure to cast its magic to tourists. Blessed with stunning natural splendour, Meghalaya is a must-visit destination for those heading to the northeast of the country.
