Shivneri Fort

Situated on top of a hill near Junnar in Maharashtra’s Pune district, Shivneri Fort is a 16th-century military fortification. It is best known as the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. With its triangular layout and seven fortified gates, the fort was built for defence and endurance. 

Steep cliffs surround the structure, while you will find the tranquil Badami Talav, statues of Jijabai and young Shivaji, and two natural water springs of Ganga and Yamuna inside. The strategic layout of the fort impressed the English traveller Fraze, who noted that it had enough supplies to last for thousands of years.
