About Portuguese Synagogue

The Portuguese Synagogue, a late 17th-century Sephardic synagogue in Amsterdam, serves as the Portuguese Jewish Community of Amsterdam's functional house of worship. Commonly known as the Esnoga, it is one of the most significant monuments of Amsterdam and is regarded as one of the most stunning synagogues in the entire world.

The interior of this building has been preserved in its entirety, making it extraordinary and worth visiting. Although some minor restorations have been undertaken, the synagogue still mostly retains its original appearance even after over 300 years. The Hebrew inscription that references Psalm 5:8 "In the abundance of Thy lovingkindness will I come into Thy house" is still visible above the entryway. Visitors are especially impressed by the courtyard's tranquility, which allows them to escape into a bygone era. Excite yourself and visit the 17th century ancient monument of Amsterdam with our Europe trip packages.

The synagogue's architecture reflects the identity and prosperity of Amsterdam's Jewish community as it was the largest synagogue of its time and one of the biggest buildings in Amsterdam. The synagogue complex also houses various offices and archives, the rabbinate, and a mortuary. Ets Haim Livraria Montezinos, the oldest Jewish library in existence and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also here and houses priceless collections of Sephardic manuscripts. A visit to the Portuguese synagogue will undoubtedly leave you in awe of the spectacular architecture and rich history of the Jewish community in Amsterdam.
