History of Begijnhof
The city is said to be founded in 14 century to offer abode to the beguines. These were the women that have a life much similar to that of a nun but had more freedom. The catholic faith got banned in the 16th century. It was then that the Begijnhof was the only Catholic institution that continued to exist as the houses were the private property of the beguine women living there.
