Best Time to Visit Andaman With Family

1. October to February: The Ideal Window

Sea conditions are at their most stable, all water activities are fully operational, and underwater visibility is at its best in December and January. This period covers both the winter school holidays and the post-monsoon season, making it the most popular and recommended time for an Andaman family trip with kids. Book ferry seats and hotels at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance for December and January, as they fill up fast.

2. March to May: Good Conditions, School Holiday Friendly

A solid second choice for families, particularly April and early May, which align with school summer holidays. Sea conditions remain good through April, water activities run without disruption, and crowds are lighter than peak season. Pre-monsoon swells begin in the second half of May, so wrapping up the trip before mid-May gives the best experience for an Andaman package for a family of 4.

3. June to September: Avoid for Family Travel

The monsoon season brings rough seas, frequent ferry cancellations between Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil Island, and suspension of most water activities. Families travelling with young children or elderly parents should avoid this window entirely. The risk of being stranded on an island mid-itinerary is high, and the overall experience of an Andaman tour package for a family is significantly compromised during these months.

How to Reach Andaman for Your Family Trip

Andaman is accessible by air and sea from major Indian cities, with flights being the most practical option for families booking an Andaman tour package for family.

  • IndiGo operates the highest frequency of flights to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Bengaluru, with fares starting from approximately INR 4,000 on advance bookings. Flight duration is around 2 hours from Chennai and approximately 2.5 hours from Delhi and Kolkata, making it the most convenient carrier for families booking Andaman tour packages for family, from any major metro.
  • Air India connects Port Blair to Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Bengaluru with both direct and one-stop options, and is the recommended carrier for families on standard and luxury Andaman packages seeking checked baggage allowances and in-flight meals included in the base fare. Ground-floor seating and additional baggage for families travelling with young children or elderly parents is more reliably accommodated on Air India.
  • SpiceJet offers budget-friendly connections to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata, and Delhi, with fares frequently available under INR 5,000 on the Chennai route during the shoulder season from February to April. It is a practical choice for families on Andaman budget packages looking to keep the overall Andaman trip cost for family of 4 within a controlled range.
  • IndiGo and Air India both operate the Chennai to Port Blair route multiple times daily, making Chennai the most reliable connecting hub for families flying in from cities without a direct Port Blair service, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Ahmedabad.

Why Andaman is India's Premier Family Destination

Planning the best Andaman Tour Packages for Family starts with understanding why this destination works so well for multigenerational groups. Here is a breakdown of the six reasons families keep coming back.

  • No Foreign Visa or Permit Required: Andaman is a Union Territory of India. Indian families only need a valid ID proof to visit Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil Island, the same as any domestic trip.
  • Direct Flights from Major Cities: Port Blair is connected by daily flights from Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Bengaluru. Flight duration ranges from 2 to 2.5 hours, making it one of the more accessible beach destinations for Indian families.
  • Calm Waters Safe for Children: The lagoon waters around Havelock and Neil Island are shallow near the shore with minimal current. Sea conditions here are significantly calmer than most west coast or international beach destinations.
  • Structured Activities Across All Age Groups: Glass-bottom boat rides are open to all ages. Sea walk starts at age 8, scuba diving at age 10, and jet skiing at age 18. Senior family members can comfortably do the Cellular Jail Light and Sound Show, nature walks, and glass-bottom boat rides.
  • One Connected Island: Circuit Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil Island are linked by private air-conditioned ferry services. Families can cover all three islands in a single trip without switching transport modes.
  • No Language Barrier: Hindi and basic English are widely understood across all three islands, removing a variable that often complicates travel with elderly parents or young children.

Family Island Selection Framework: Choosing the Right Island

Every island in the Andaman may not be perfect if you’re on an Andaman family trip with Kids. The right choice depends on who you are travelling with, how much movement your group can manage, and what kind of experience you are looking for. Here is a breakdown to help you decide.

1. Port Blair (South Andaman): The Family Base Camp

The Family Base Camp Port Blair is where every Andaman tour package for families begins and ends. It is the only island with an airport, a government hospital, and a wide range of hotels across budget and standard categories. Families with elderly parents or very young children benefit from basing themselves here, as it has the most accessible infrastructure of all the islands.

The key attractions here are the Cellular Jail Light and Sound Show, Corbyn's Cove Beach, and the North Bay Island day trip for glass-bottom boat rides. Port Blair works best as a 2-night stay at the start and end of your trip rather than the central focus of your itinerary.

2. Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep): The Aquatic Family Hub

The Aquatic Family Hub Havelock is the island that most families come to Andaman. Radhanagar Beach here has a gradual sand entry, calm water near the shore, and is considered one of the safest beaches for families with children. The beach also has a predictable tide pattern, which matters when you are managing young children near the water.

Water activities available here cover the full age range. Glass-bottom boat rides are open to all ages, sea walk starts at age 8, and scuba diving is available from age 10. Havelock island is best suited for families where at least some members want structured water activity experiences.

3. Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep): The Calm, Low-Crowd Alternative

Neil Island is the right choice for families travelling with toddlers or elderly parents who prefer a quieter environment. Laxmanpur Beach on Neil island has flat, shallow water entry and very low footfall compared to Havelock, making it easier to manage young children near the shore.

The island has fewer activity operators than Havelock Island but covers the basics well, including snorkeling and glass-bottom boat rides. Neil island works best as a 1 to 2 night addition to a Havelock-based itinerary rather than a standalone destination.

4. Ross & Smith Islands: The Day-Trip Sandbar Experience

Ross and Smith are twin islands in North Andaman connected by a natural sandbar that appears during low tide. This is a day trip, not an overnight stay, and it works well for families who have already covered Port Blair and Havelock and want one additional experience.

The sandbar walk between the Ross and Smith islands is accessible to most age groups and does not require any water activity certification. The trip involves a ferry from Diglipur, which is a longer journey, so it is better suited for families on a 9 to 10 night itinerary rather than a short trip.

Age-Group Activity Matrix for Andaman Tour Packages for Family

When travelling with family, it is important that every age group finds their mode of enjoyment. When you are choosing the Andaman tour packages for family at Thrillophilia we understand this, and curate your itinerary based on who you are travelling with, whether that is a toddler, a teenager, or an elderly parent. Andaman tour packages for families have structured experiences suited to every age group. One of our verified travellers, Mohit. Who booked the Andaman Vacation for Family | Sunsets and Scenic Shores package was so satisfied with the entire activities experience that he specially mentioned this in his review, stating, “The unique complex offers all possible aqua-sport facilities like Water-skiing, Sail boats, glass boat, Speed Boats etc., and safe water sports like Paddle Boats, Row Boats, jet ski etc. Snorkeling is a don't-miss activity.”

1. For Toddlers and Children Under 6: Glass-Bottom Boat and Beach Play

Glass-Bottom Boat and Beach Play. Glass-bottom boat rides have no minimum age requirement. For beach time, Neil Island's Laxmanpur Beach is the better choice for this age group, with flat, shallow water entry and low footfall. Radhanagar Beach on Havelock is also manageable, but parents should check tide timings before taking young children near the water. Children under 6 are not eligible for sea walk, snorkeling, scuba diving, or kayaking. One of our verified travellers, Priyanshu Banerjee, who booked the Dreamy Escapade to the Islands of Andaman package, was so pleased with the experience that he said, “Traveling with an infant can be challenging, but thanks to your well-thought-out schedule, we never felt tired or rushed. The inclusion of sufficient rest times allowed us to relax and enjoy the beauty of the islands at our own pace.”

2. For Children Aged 6-12: Sea Walk, Snorkeling, and Kayaking Guide

Sea Walk, Snorkeling, and Kayaking Guide. Children aged 6 and above can participate in guided snorkeling with a life vest and banana boat rides in calm sea conditions. Sea walk is available from age 8, where children walk on the ocean floor with a helmet supply of oxygen, no swimming required. Kayaking is available from age 10 and requires basic swimming ability.

3. For Teenagers: Scuba Diving (PADI Discover) and Banana Boat Thrills

Scuba Diving (PADI Discover) and Banana Boat Thrills Teenagers aged 10 and above are eligible for the PADI Discover Scuba program, a guided introductory dive conducted in calm shallow waters with a certified instructor, requiring no prior certification. Banana boat rides are available from age 6 and work well as a group activity for teenagers travelling with siblings. Jet ski riding is available for ages 18 and above.

4. For Seniors and Parents: Cellular Jail, Nature Walks, and Beach Access Guide

Cellular Jail, Nature Walks, and Beach Access Guide The Cellular Jail Light and Sound Show in Port Blair is one of the most accessible experiences for senior family members, requiring only seated attendance with no physical strain. Radhanagar Beach on Havelock has a gradual sand entry suitable for seniors, while Neil Island's Laxmanpur Beach is flatter and calmer, making it the easier option for those with limited mobility.

Water Activity Safety Guide for Families: Age Limits and Conditions

Safety guidelines and activity conditions are worth understanding in advance, especially when you are travelling with young children or elderly parents. Here are some things to keep in mind when planning water activities for your family. Scuba diving operators generally operate under recognised diving certifications such as PADI, while other water activity providers follow local maritime and safety regulations.

Trip was excellent. Everything went well. I was skeptical when I had to change the trip from 5 to 7 days but it went well. Price was reasonable. Both sales and support teams were very helpful. Best part of the trip was moonlight kayaking. This I booked on my own. It would have been great if this was included as well. We got ITT majestic ferry, which is probably the best in that route. Hotels were good as well. Only regret is I didn't get a beach side property. Next time I will make sure to ask for it 😄
