About Yeh Pulu Temple

Situated in Bedulu village in central Bali, the Yeh Pulu Temple is an extraordinarily beautiful attraction to witness with our Bali tour package. Tucked amidst rice fields and freshwater springs, the temple is an archaeological site, which has stunning carvings etched onto the rock, depicting Hindu gods, people, as well as mythological Wayang or shadow puppet characters telling ancient stories.

With the bright green fields and the cool waters of the stream acting as its backdrop, the temple begins with a corridor, almost seemingly being cut out directly from a rock. Then you find a rustic basin, where water is spurting out of, and a Balinese mythological figure that stands in an intimidating way.

Located on the banks of the Petanu River, the temple has a very rich history, and was first discovered in the eponymous archaeological site in 1925. Between 1949 and 1953, the Yeh Pulu Temple underwent a lot of restorations, so as to protect its sandstone wall from abrasion due to the water from the rice fields.

It is believed that the temple actually belongs to a building dating back to the 14th century, and has relics similar to the ones found in Penataran Temple in East Java.

An interesting fact about the Yeh Pulu temple: It’s name is derived from the words Yeh which means water, and Pulu, which translates to a container of rice. Therefore, the name Yeh Pulu means water that comes from a container of rice.
