Virgen de las Angustias

Basilica of Angustias is a Parish church of Granada that is an important religious site and an active place of worship. Located in the Puerta Real neighbourhood in the centre of the city, this church dates back to the 1600s and was built under the commission of Juan Luis Ortega. It sports a Baroque style architecture and has a nave, transept and chancel with eight sides.

The exterior of the church has two lofty towers with Corinthian columns, tiled pinnacles and a pieta by Jose de Mora and Bernardo. The interior is lavish with an ornate altarpiece, sculptures and paintings by the artists of the Baroque School of Granada. The church organises several festivals and ceremonies in the honour of Virgin Mary throughout the month of September.

He Ofrenda Floral ceremony is the most popular during which people flock to the basilica and place a bunch of flowers on the facade as a tribute to the patroness. The Virgen Angustias procession on the last Sunday of every month is another important festivity at the church.
