- Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is renowned for its wide collection of exotic flora ranging from orchids to wildflowers and dense evergreen forests to tiny herbs.
- Bird watchers are in awe of this sanctuary due to the huge variety of endangered and rare birds available in this part of the country. Certain species like the grey-breasted laughing thrush, black, orange flycatcher and Nilgiri flycatcher have been a major attraction for the visitors.
- Rare and exotic animals like the Indian giant squirrel, spotted deer, Sambar, Indian muntjac, gaur, Asian elephant, wild pig, giant flying squirrel are a few of the animals that one can spot while trekking along the sanctuary.
Exotic Birds of Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary
Designated as one of the important areas for birds in the world this sanctuary is a haven for exotic and rare species of avians. With the presence of dense vegetation and several swamps and water bodies, it is a natural habitat for several birds around the year.
Some of the birds that have made this place their home are the Indian blue robin, dollar bird, Malabar grey hornbill, Nilgiri flycatcher, Nilgiri wood pigeon, grey-headed bulbul, white-bellied blue flycatcher, Sri Lankan frogmouth, greater flame back woodpecker, white-cheeked barbet, Malabar trogon, southern hill mynah and many more interesting and colourful birds.
Traveler's Tips for Visiting Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary
-The jeep/car ride from Madikeri to Pushpagiri Wildlife sanctuary is a little steep, thus visitors with a compromised back should take adequate precautions.
-Get written permission from the respective forest officials before commencing the trek.
-The forest is closed during the summer months to avoid forest fire.
-Be aware not to throw plastic waste in and around the sanctuary for a responsible and sustainable trip.
-Stay away from dense vegetation, forests and bushes for they are dwelling places for several birds and animals.
-It is advised to take the uphill drive empty stomach for people who have motion sickness.
-Carry a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated.
-Umbrella, sunscreen, rainwear and hats should be packed in case the rain gods are happy and throw a flash of a shower or the sun is too strong for you to walk.
-Carry a change of clothes in case they get wet or soiled.
-Packing some light snacks would be a great idea as there are no places to buy food inside the Wildlife sanctuary.
-Wear comfortable and sturdy walking shoes to bear the trek with different kinds of terrains.
-Camera and binoculars are a must to capture the colorful and interesting birds, animals, flowers, insects and the surroundings of the Wildlife sanctuary.
Things You Should Know:
1. Places to Stay: There is a tiny shed in between Heggedemane and Kumar Parvat Kudre Doddi built by the wildlife wing officials for patrolling forest personnel to rest. The area behind Kallu Mantapa is also a good option to camp for trekkers. The popular options are Bhatru's house at Girigadde where trekkers can stay the night in their respective sleeping bags.
2. Places to Eat: One can either carry food in their bags in case they are fussy or are allergic to certain food. Bhatru's house at Girigadde is a go-to place where one can order local food and relish it at a very affordable price.
3. Transportation: There are 4X4 jeeps available, plying between Madikeri and Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. Jeep safaris are organised within the forest premises taking adequate safety measures.
4. Medical Facilities: It is suggested to carry important medicines and first aid along as there are no medical shops or hospitals close to the Wildlife Sanctuary. The closest hospital is in Madikeri.
5. Network Connectivity: Do not expect great mobile network connectivity at the Pushpagiri Wildlife sanctuary for it is surrounded by lush green forests and dense vegetation. Rather it is advisable to enjoy the trek with its lavish greens keeping all worries and fear aside.
