About Mengkuang Dam

The Mengkuang Dam is the second dam to be built in Penang after the Ayer Itam Dam. It was opened officially in the year 1985. The dam has been constructed with dimensions that make it the largest in Penang.

Location: The Mengkuang Dam is situated to the north east of Butterworth in Malaysia.

Highlights: The Mengkaung reservoir has ten times the capacity of the Air Itam dam. It has remained closed for the public since 2011 and is due to open again on 31st July 2016. Recreational activities are offered by the park near the dam area. The dam also acts as the venue for the annual Penang International Dragon Boat Festival which is a fiesta of colours and noise.

Best time: A visit to the dam is best enjoyed during a pleasant weather, when one can easily enjoy at the park.

Price: Entry is free to the Mengkuang Dam.
