Lachen is a peaceful Himalayan village that sits at about 2,600 m in North Sikkim. It is also a gateway to high-altitude wonders and one of the best places to visit in Sikkim. The wooden houses are surrounded by rhododendrons and pine forests, and they are decorated with fluttering prayer flags. They are also part of Dzumsa's unique self-governance system.

Lachen monastery is one of the major attractions of the place, which was built in 1858 by the Nyingma Sect. Every morning, mist rises over the monastery with the mighty Himalayas in the background, adding an extra layer of serenity. The prayer halls are full of murals, sacred relics, and chanting monks, providing a spiritually calm space for meditation. The Handicraft Centre is always busy with locals making yak-wool shawls and selling wooden crafts.

Lachen is the starting point for epic treks to places like the holy Gurudongmar Lake (5,430 m), Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, and the Thangu and Chopta valleys. You can also embark on hikes to secret lakes like Tso Lhamo. Seeing wildlife like yam, musk deer, and exotic birds is an absolute treat for any nature lover.
