About Gripsholm Castle

The early history of the palace dates back to the 1370s when it was built as a fort by the Bo Jonsson group. It was later sold to Queen Margaret I and ever since then, it has passed through a lot of hands. The last royal family to gain control of this house was the House of Vasa. Today it is also one of the most well-preserved theatres dating back to the 18th century. The interiors and the rooms are well preserved, including those of Duke Karl’s chamber. The castle also has an internationally renowned portrait collection that showcases historical figures dating back from King Gustav’s period.
