The Chapelle Expiatoire Paris located on Square Louis XVI in the centre of Paris, was erected during the Restoration as a memorial to the Ancien Régime and the Revolutionary period. In 1815, under the direction of Louis XVIII, construction began on this stunning Neoclassical and Romantic structure.

It commemorates the royal family and was built on the site of a Revolutionary burial site where Charlotte Corday, Louis XVI, the Comtesse du Barry, Marie Antoinette, and Olympe de Gouges were laid in 1793. An altar at one corner and two semi-circular side chapels with statues of Louis and Marie-Antoinette adorn the interior, which otherwise has only a marble floor to offer visitors.

There is a lot of cream, white, and black in this room, with the gold candlesticks in the far corner as a pop of colour. The sole purpose of the structure is to serve as a memorial. The chapel was previously encircled by cypress trees, which were removed in 1862 and replaced with a public garden.
