Founded in the year 1785, the General Archive of the Indias is located in Seville. This historically significant collection of Spanish administrative documents is a historically significant structure and a must-visit when in Seville.
The Archivo de Indias is a collection made up of more than 43,000 files, spanning over 80 million pages, filled with several details pertaining to Spanish history. The structure was decorated with marble veneers, providing a beautiful look to this nine-kilometer gallery.
The archives were commissioned from various places including the Simancas, Cadiz, and Seville. This structure was termed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in 1987, with Cathedral and Reales Alcazares. View the famous staircase here, which was created by Lucas Cintorar, or explore the Central patio, which is built out of stone, and is of appropriate proportions.
You can also get to indulge in viewing the arches with half columns standing on the pillars. Some of the famous files and documents available to explore here include the Council of the Indias, a collection from the 16th-19th centuries, the Casa de la Contratación, Treaty of Tordesillas, and the Secretariat of the Court of Arribadas of Cadiz, from the same time period.
